Summary: Concise, and clear!
Rating: 4
This concise text book on Respiratory medicine is highly recommended for every pulmonologist who needs to update her knowledge base in the shortest time, concise, clear and practical, free of ivory tower’s controversies!!

Summary: So far, so good!
Rating: 4
I bought this book as my first “big” respiratory medicine textbook and I have to say it’s very well done! The content is pretty up to date, it’s simple and practical, easy to read. The images are amazing and they come in PDF on a companion CD free with the book… perfect for PowerPoint presentations. It’s not absolutely complete… but no pulmonary textbook is! If you’re just starting in respiratory medicine, get this textbook first!

Summary: Excellent
Rating: 5
Not a comprehensive textbook of pulmonary medicine, but a very good place for a quick review. The use of color flowcharts, algorithms, pathology makes this very easy to read . I thought the chapters on sarcoid, asthma, copd were very good.(Although the asthma chapter left out details on antiIGE therapy)
A frequent problem of many “textbooks ” is the presentation and I think that is where this book really scores high. The material is lucid , easy to read and the emphasis on pathogenesis , physiology makes it easy to understand as well.

This should be used as a starting point for any topic and then Murray and Nadel or other text books can be used as a reference.

I wish more authors would use this format when writing text books , the subject matter is fascinating, why not make it look nice as well?

The Pulmonary Endothelium: Function in health and disease, Wiley Blackwell 2009

December 24, 2011 at 12:57 am | Posted in Respiratory/ Pulmonary | Leave a comment

Product Description

The Pulmonary Endotheliumis a uniquely comprehensive compendium of our current knowledge of the pulmonary endothelium and is the first book dedicated specifically to the subject, offering insights into current and future approaches to management. The text provides the clinician with the most up–to–date information on one of the core physiological processes in airway disease and is an ideal point of reference for both postgraduates and professionals – specialist physicians in pulmonology and allergy and workers in biomedical and pharmaceutical research.

From the Back Cover The pulmonary endothelium interacts with both blood and underlying vascular smooth muscle.

As well as being critical for gas exchange, the lung endothelium is now implicated in the modulation

of a variety of processes, such as inflammation, thrombosis, vasoconstriction, and vascular permeability. Our understanding of the pulmonary endothelium has increased enormously in recent years, particularly its role in several diseases, including pulmonary hypertension, emphysema, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and cancer.

Research in many fields continues to elucidate how the pulmonary endothelium contributes to the etiology and pathophysiology of lung disease and to identify possible therapeutic strategies. This book clearly presents the current body of knowledge and explores how this knowledge may be applied to increase our understanding of disease and develop new types of treatment. Above all, it aims to improve the outcomes of acute and chronic lung diseases.

The book is divided into three sections. The first describes the normal pulmonary endothelium, including development, structure, cell biology, signalling, function, heterogeneity, interactions with circulating cells and mesenchymal cells, and the endothelium of the bronchial circulation. The second section deals with mechanisms and consequences of pulmonary endothelial cell injury, ranging from effects on endothelial cells to organ injury, including protection against lung permeability and drug targeting to pulmonary endothelium. The third section focuses on the pulmonary endothelium in disease.

Describes and discusses the lung endothelium as the first and principal locus of blood–born information processing

Reviews maintenance of normal lung vascular tone and modulation of vasoconstriction

Discusses the lung endothelium in modulation of pulmonary vascular remodelling

Highlights recent work on the important role of the lung endothelium in the pathogenesis of lung diseases

The Pulmonary Endothelium provides specialist physicians and clinical researchers in pulmonology,

critical care, and allergy with the most up to date information on core physiological processes in lung

disease, and offers insights into current and future approaches to management.

Dail and Hammars Pulmonary Pathology Third Edition Volume I Nonneoplastic Lung Disease, Volume II Neoplastic Lung Disease, Springer 2008

December 23, 2011 at 4:26 am | Posted in Pathology, Respiratory/ Pulmonary | Leave a comment

Product Description:

Dail and Hammar s Pulmonary Pathology has established itself as the definitive reference in the field. This third edition is now a two-volume, full color text. Joseph F. Tomashefski, Jr. has led the effort as Editor-in-Chief with the collaboration of Philip T. Cagle, Carol F. Farver, and Armando E. Fraire as Associate Editors. Drs. David H. Dail and Samuel P. Hammar have provided significant contributions to this new edition. The editorial board has continued to build upon the excellence Dail and Hammar achieved in the previous editions by reorganizing, expanding and substantially revising the text. This authoritative reference work has been thoroughly updated to cover newly recognized entities and the latest advances in molecular diagnostic techniques. Abundantly illustrated with more than 2000 illustrations in total, 1900 of which in full color, this outstanding contribution to pathology literature is a must-have for the library of every surgical and pulmonary pathologist.

Volume I focuses on Nonneoplastic lung diseases. Volume II is devoted to Neoplastic Lung Diseases.

New chapters include information on the pathology of small airways disease; forensic lung pathology; molecular genetics of lung and pleural neoplasms and pre-invasive disease. Over ninety percent of the illustrations in the current edition are now presented in color.

This new edition also includes two chapters devoted to molecular pathology that are a compendium of information on the molecular pathology of lung tumors as well as a primer on basic molecular pathology.

Dail and Hammar s Pulmonary Pathology has set the standard for which all other pathology texts strive to achieve.

From the stellar reviews of the Second Edition:

When the first edition of Pulmonary Pathology by David H. Dail and Samuel P. Hammar was published in 1988, it was clear that it was to become the reference book for pulmonary pathology. It was difficult to conceive then that a better book on the subject could be assembled. The second edition of this encyclopedic work proved convincingly that improvement could occur. Indeed, the new revised edition is more complete and better illustrated…I consider this book to be an outstanding contribution to the pathology literature and a must in the library of surgical and pulmonary pathologists.

The Pulmonary Epithelium in Health and Disease, Wiley 2008

August 3, 2011 at 1:36 am | Posted in Respiratory/ Pulmonary | Leave a comment

“This is essential reading for everyone who would like to update their knowledge of the pulmonary epithelium.  It offers a comparison between laboratory animal models and human lungs, highlighting the differences and the similarities between the two, which will be particularly useful to researchers.” –Doody’s, April 2009

The past two decades have seen extraordinary advances in our understanding of the role of the pulmonary epithelium in airway health and disease. Our understanding of epithelial biology has expanded exponentially in the past decade.

This book provides a unique comprehensive description of the structure of the epithelium, its damage by various agents and the mechanism of epithelial repair. In addition, it’s detailed coverage includes not only the multiple ways in which the epithelium contributes to host defence, but also the nature and functional consequences of the interactions of inhaled pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, allergens and pollutants. the role of the epithelium in regulating airway inflammation and structure is also discussed, as is the role of the epithelium as a target for inhaled medications and as a route for novel drug delivery.
Containing chapters on multiple aspects of epithelial function in health and disease, each one is written by a leader in the field. This is essential reading for pulmonary researchers and physicians requiring detailed advanced understanding of the epithelium as well as those working in allergy, biomedical and pharmaceutical research
